Eklavya Model Residential School Lumla (EMRSL) is a Government of India, Ministry of Tribal Affairs promoted 100% Free Residential Educational institution for Meritorious Tribal Students. EMRS system was created under Article 275/1 of the Constitution of India for education & welfare of Tribal societies in India whereby eventually making it the most successful scheme of Government of India across Tribal Areas in India in uplifting lives and creating better society by education. GOI now aims to establish over 700 such schools in India. Presently over 200 EMRS institutions are successfully running managed by NGOs.
EMRS scheme is at par with Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyala (JNV) Scheme of Central Government.
JNV are fully managed by Government of India where as EMRS are managed by local NGOs under MOU with the respective state governments where its located. Grants are 100% for managing the school with residential facilities for all students and staff. Grants come in 2 phases; 1 from Central Government for the Student Maintenance and the 2nd comes from State Government for Salary & Administrative purposes.
Eklavya Model Residential School Lumla in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh is the only such school under MOU with Art of Living Arunachal Pradesh (AOLAP), Arunachal Pradesh registered branch of Art of Living Foundation. As a model we have managed it in an effective way such that it has created many Benchmarks in School management and education system.
Universal Humanitarian His Holiness Sri Sri Ravishankar is the key source of inspiration, wisdom, strength & holistic environment not only from the inception but the development and general management of the institution. HIS vision of “Broaden the Vision & Deepen the Roots” remains the central point in all activities at EMRSLumla. Sri Sri has special concern for our Tribal Societies and HIS efforts to uplift them is translated into effective efforts every where including Arunachal Pradesh. Sri Sri had been invited by past Chief Ministers in Arunachal Pradesh for Wisdom & Council time & again. HIS attention here has caused transformation of thousands of lives through various educational & developmental programs. Sri Sri in 2014 April was offered EMRS Lumla venture by then Chief Secretary Mr Rajendra Negi. Sri Sri accepting the request then nominated a long time AOL volunteer Mr Anil Bahl as Director of this project.
Sri Sri & AOL is responsible for running over 450 Free Schools in India in Tribal, Rural & Slum areas thereby providing Free Education along with Mid-Day Meals to over 65,000 students from underprivileged families.
Eventually an MOU was signed in 2014 for the purpose among Government of Arunachal Pradesh and Art of Living Arunachal Pradesh, a Society registered under The Societies Registration Act 1860 with No. SR/ITA/3393 in state as an NGO for charitable purposes with Registration number .
Since 2014, Anil Bahl, Director- EMRSL has been effectively managing and running this prestigious educational institution in one of the most remote areas of this Nation.
Anil Bahl is a highly qualified extensively experienced dedicated individual who had been a volunteer to Sri Sri’s movement since 2000. His extensive experience in various fields has proved extremely useful in making this institution a Benchmark in Government Educational System across the nation thereby creating a genuine model that can be replicated anywhere even in the toughest of locations and environments. His dedicated efforts only could overcome executive difficulties at every step in this project. Nearest resource market is Guwahati, some 550km away and high altitude mountain terrains have many natural hindrances producing lack in many basic areas such as TeleCommunication, Power, Potable Water, Transport, Food availability to name a few. School boast of Top Of The Line Electronics, Furniture, Equipment and facilities against all odds due to nature and human elements.
Lumla is located at an altitude of approximately 8000feet in Eastern Himalayan ranges, just 40 km from International boundaries with China in North and Bhutan in West. It has only 2 seasons, extreme cold (Temps upto (minus) -10 degrees) and extreme rains ( April to September) creating many natural hindrances like Landslides, Power Shutdowns, TeleCom shutdown, Water Supply shutdown, etc apart from human limitations related to extreme Natural Environment. Its the historic entry point for His Holiness Dalai Lhama as well as subsequent incursion point during 1962 China Incursion in India. An effective and a very dedicated team of staff members have put a lot of many a times super-human efforts to over come shortcomings ranging from lack of timely Grants, Extreme Weather, Very Remote location, Lack of resources required for school residents.
We procure almost all our requirements including food items, Vegetables, equipment and services form Guwahati (550km) and Tezpur (400km & nearest Railway station) in Assam. Transport time of items is minimum 3 days from procurement place to mountain top school campus. We ensure to provide nutritious food to maintain good health and beat these extreme weather conditions. We provide them many types of Uniforms, Winter clothing, raincoats and all other accessories of the finest quality so that they can live a comfortable life at par with a student in a Public School on our school campus.
Distance form markets has surely impacted our facilities and services. But we counter the service time by keeping additional equipment and extra items for use.
A very dedicated and highly qualified Principal Ms Vibha Joshi has been instrumental from inception itself to take forward the academic activities in EMRSL. She had over 23 years of teaching experience modern educational environment when she joined, and since had been a force to reckon with in not only Academics but also training of Teaching & Non-Teaching Staff.

EMRS, Lumla is a Government of India, Ministry of Tribal Affairs promoted residential school offering 100% free education to the brightest students of the region. The EMRS scheme is at par with the Central Government aided Novadaya Vidyalaya Scheme, where we promote a culture so that children can follow their dreams and take the right path to fulfil it. The only difference is that the Eklavya Model Residential School is run by the local NGOs under the MOU with the respective State Governments. Grants are received from the Central Government as well as the State Government for student maintenance and salary & administrative purposes respectively, which are utilised 100% to manage the school facility as a whole.
